Tax office warns dodgy websites spreading false superannuation claims

The age Aussies can access their super savings on retirement is not changing, tax authorities reiterated.

The Australian Taxation Office has issued a warning over dodgy websites claiming the age people can access superannuation will increase to 70.

The age at which Australians can access their super savings on retirement is fixed at 60 and will not be changing from the start of next month, the ATO said.

False claims that the re-elected Labor government would be changing the superannuation preservation age rules by 10 years sparked the ATO reminder.

Finance experts have re-emphasised the importance of playing the superannuation "long game" as the ASX climbed for the sixth straight day yesterday.

Deputy commissioner of the ATO Emma Rosenzweig says the claims were "classic fake news".

"Always consider the source of information you see, and if in doubt go to trusted sources such as the ATO website, your super fund website, your registered tax agent or licensed financial adviser," she said.

"Beware of websites that might be trying to harvest your personal information such as your TFN, identity details or myGov login details.

"Think twice before acting on information heard from third-party sources, including non-official websites or on social media."

The ATO is also warning people to be wary about offers of free expert tax advice from individuals or companies.

You should ensure anyone who proposes helping with tax affairs is a practising lawyer or registered with the Tax Practitioners Board.
