Bodybuilder Martyn Ford is set to star in the upcoming Mortal Kombat 2 as Shao Khan, a role he recently said was like a dream come true.
What did Martyn Ford say about his Mortal Kombat II role?
Speaking to ComingSoon, Ford — who most recently starred in the Prime Video series House of David — talked about how he’s fallen into high profiles in what feels like “one dream happens and the next one comes.” He briefly touched on his role as Shao Khan.
“The last few years I’ve had a massive opportunity to play various characters of stature. It just seems like one dream happens and the next one comes,” said Ford. “The last three characters I’ve played have been Flamma, who is a gladiator within history, the greatest gladiator of all time. Then Shao Kahn in Mortal Kombat II, and then to play Goliath just topped it off. So for me, I’m not sure where I go from this as far as baddies are concerned. I think I’ve probably hit three of the greatest baddies of all time and Goliath being the ultimate icing on the cake. It’s just awesome to have the opportunity to play him.”
Although he didn’t talk in depth about playing Shao Khan, he did talk about the chance to step into a bigger role in House of David, something that he’s been hoping to do.
“It was awesome to have the opportunity to do more than just a fight scene with Goliath because that’s the one problem when you always play the bad guy, is you kind of know the ending in a sense,” Ford said. “There’s always the good guy that comes out on top with most of the shows. Obviously it’s been a story of history. It’s not rocket science. So to have the ability to bring something beforehand was awesome for me. It was exciting to play. It’s hands down, I’d say this is, to date, my most enjoyable role. Not only the people I’ve worked with, but the opportunity to play that character. It was awesome. I don’t have enough good words to say about the experience.”
Mortal Kombat 2 will feature the return of Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion, Lewis Tan as Cole Young, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Josh Lawson as Kano, Tadanobu Asano as Lord Raiden, Mehcad Brooks as Jax, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Chin Han as Shang Tsung, Joe Taslim as Bi-Han and Sub-Zero, Hiroyuki Sanada as Hanzo Hasashi and Scorpion, and Max Huang as Kung Lao. Joining them are several new characters in the form of Karl Urban as Johnny Cage, Adeline Rudolph as Kitana, Tati Gabrielle as Jade, Martyn Ford as emperor Shao Kahn, Damon Herriman as Netherrealm demon Quan Chi, Desmond Chiam as Edenian King Jerrod, and Ana Thu Nguyen as Queen Sindel.
